English as a Second Language (ESL) |
HUCE's Language Institute offers English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for both general communication and special purposes.
Note that the General English classes in this category focus on development of communicative competence. The course work will follow the whole language approach. Grammar, writing, reading, listening, speaking skills are taught as a means to achieving communicative competence. By integrating listening, speaking, vocabulary building with grammar, reading and writing, students are better able to use the English language as a communication tool for personal and professional growth.
To achieve the goal of communicative competence, classes will use integrated texts and assignments in conjunction with audios, videos, games, activities, and readings from magazines and newspapers as appropriate to level.

This advanced beginning course will expand the repertoire of basic language skills to enable students to deal competently with predictable everyday situations. Students will build on oral language skills, grammar and writing skills to communicate simple information and describe events. Reading and vocabulary segments will enhance basic reading skills.

Work on improved fluency and general comprehension will allow students to participate in conversations and discussions on topics of interest in personal and professional contexts. There is more emphasis on grammar structures as it relates to improved writing and speaking skills. Readings from magazines, newspapers about current events will aid in the goal of communicative competence.

The focus of this course is on developing fluency and the ability to communicate on various topics in diverse situations. The student will be able to use essentials of the main language system in communication, including grammar, vocabulary, and writing. Students will be able to choose from a variety of ways in which to express ideas and opinions in many personal and some professional contexts.
