Portuguese Language
Image for Portuguese Language The Portuguese Program at HUCE offers the skills and strategies needed to learn this beautiful and important language. The material for the class presents Portuguese as Luso-Brazilian peoples normally use it.

The program aims at helping students enjoy the process of acquiring a second language, while learning to use Portuguese in meaningful ways, i.e., through Friendly Classroom Conversations; field trips to Brazilian and Portuguese Restaurants, Civic Centers, Embassies, Churches, Synagogues, and Mosques; Reading Brazilian and Portuguese Newspapers and Magazines; listening to Brazilian and Portuguese Music, watching Brazilian TV, movies and soccer; attending and/or participating in Visual Art Exhibits and Cultural Events, such as Capoeira (African-Brazilian Marshall Arts) Tournaments, Samba Workshops (where students can learn how to dance the Samba—an African Brazilian dance form, fashion ahows, etc.

In this context, interactive, lively, and dynamic activities play a principal role, while grammar serves as an aid in the language acquisition process. Simply stated, the essence of our Portuguese program is communication. In addition, we also place a significant emphasis on understanding the various cultural manifestations of the Lusophone Diaspora, and learning about the contribution of African peoples to the evolution of Portuguese language, literatures, cinematography, architecture, couture, and Visual Arts.
