Six Sigma |
The American Society for Quality (ASQ) defines Six Sigma as "a fact-based, data-driven philosophy of quality improvement that values defect prevention over defect detection. It drives customer satisfaction and bottom-line results by reducing variation and waste, thereby promoting a competitive advantage. It applies anywhere variation and waste exist, and every employee should be involved."
The Six Sigma approach identifies and eliminates defects with a structured, data-driven, problem-solving method of using rigorous data-gathering and statistical analysis. The statistical representation of Six Sigma describes quantitatively how a process is performing. To achieve Six Sigma, a process must not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities. A Six Sigma defect is defined as anything outside of customer specifications.
HUCE is pleased to offer its prospective students with alternative options for learning this important body of modern management procedures.
-
HUCE's distinguished partner -- Reed Educational Services -- offers a short, inexpensive, instructor-led online course for students who want to find out what Six Sigma is really about before they invest the substantial time and effort required to successfully complete the more extensive courses that will prepare them to obtain their Green Belt and Black Belt professional certifications. Black Belts organize Six Sigma projects; Green Belts assist the Black Belts to collect and analyze project data
- For students who live within the Baltimore-Washington area and who seek traditional face-to-face instruction, HUCE will be providing Lean Six Sigma classes taught by its nationally accliamed partner 6SigmaTek in the Fall 2008 and Summer 2009 semesters. Note: Lean Six Sigma enhances speed (cycle time) as well as quality.

Many readers may be aware that Six Sigma was originally developed to
improve the quality of manufacturing processes, but some may not
be aware that Six Sigma methods have evolved to a point where they are
currently being successfully applied, not just to manufacturing, but to
a surprisingly wide range of service sectors. Interested readers can gain
a tangible sense of the current power and the scope of Six Sigma methodologies
by reading some of the success stories Presented in the following references:
